Joe Winslow graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2020 from The Crane School of Music (in Potsdam New York) with a Bachelor of Music Education, and a performance certificate. He received the Music Education Departmental Scholar award his senior year, based on academic performance. At Crane Joe performed in the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Bear Claw Pep Band, and was a founding member of the award winning Quartz saxophone quartet. His senior recital included performances on trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet and ukulele, in addition to classical and jazz performances on his primary instrument of saxophone. During his time at Crane, Joe studied composition and arranging, performing a variety of his pieces both with his ensembles and solo. Joe studied in the studio of Dr. Casey Grev, and has been teaching his own studio for many years.
Prior to his transfer to Crane in January 2018, Joe began his music education at the University of New Hampshire, after graduating from Exeter High School in 2016. While at UNH, Joe performed in the Wind Symphony, Jazz Band, Wildcat Marching Band, and a saxophone quartet. After his freshman year, he went on tour in Switzerland and Italy with UNH's top jazz band. During his time at UNH, Joe was also an active member of the Deep Blue C Studio Orchestra which performed at such venues as the Vinegar Hill Theater and the Bush Compound on Walker Point.
Joe's teaching experience includes over six years of private saxophone lessons from beginners to college students, one of which auditioned successfully into a competitive college saxophone studio. In addition to saxophone, Joe has taught beginning percussion, flute, clarinet, trumpet and piano, and has led multiple jazz clinics on ensemble playing and improvisation. He has completed over 100 hours of teaching observation at elementary, middle and high schools in both NH and NY, and will complete his student teaching for certification in Buffalo NY this fall.
Joe is accomplished in saxophone restoration and repair, and has tuned and repaired dozens of saxophones over the last 4 years, including significant work for his fellow studio musicians at both Crane and UNH. He has also bought, refurbished and sold a number of alto saxophones during that time.
Outside of music, Joe has been involved in his community in other ways. He was an active member of Stratham Boy Scout Troop 185 for many years, and received his Eagle Scout rank in 2016. As a Boy Scout, he was a summer camp counselor in 2014 and 2015 at Camp Carpenter in Manchester NH. He has completed many community service hours and continues to reach out to local schools to help out with their music programs.
